Welcome to the Pyramid Lake Optometry Department
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your family of all ages to the Pyramid Lake Optometry Department. Come visit us for your Comprehensive eye health evaluation, as well as for our very fashionable eyewear. The mission of the Optometry Department is to provide the highest level of eye care and services to you, our patients. In addition to providing quality eye care, another one of our goals in the Optometry department is to educate the public about the health of your eyes, and how important it is to have annual exams.
Services Provided
- Comprehensive Vision and Eye Health Evaluations. Managing eye health conditions such as eye trauma, infections, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic eye condition.
- We have a large selection of frames to choose from including some great Native American frames.
- We have experienced staff that will help you select the frame shape, size, and color that looks best for you.
- We offer contact lens fit and evaluation. We can order in the contacts here for you, and if interested in color contacts we can order those, too.
- Children’s Vision and Eye Health evaluations are also available.
- Sports Eyewear and Sun wear.
- Student Program: The PLTHC offers free eyeglasses to qualifying enrolled members who are or will be attending college or school.
- Senior Program: The PLTHC offers free eyeglasses to qualifying seniors. Who do not have any other type of vision insurance. To qualify you must be 60 years of age or older. Be an enrolled Pyramid Lake Tribal Member or be a Native American from a federal recognized tribe who resides on Pyramid Lake Reservation.
- Diabetes Program: The Diabetes Program will pay for glasses once a year, if you are a Native American from a federally recognized Tribe and resides on the Pyramid Lake Reservation and receives your Diabetic treatment at the PLTHC.
- Any glasses or contacts that will be self pay need to have the money order first before anything can be ordered
- Contact lens trials exempt when contact lens RX is finalized then a money order will be needed.
- Diagnose and manage Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, and Diabetic Retinopathy.
- Urgent Care eye conditions; allergy, bacterial conjunctivitis, flashes/floaters.

MEET OUR DOCTOR
Dr. Umari Duffus is a native of Los Angeles, CA, born to a Jamaican father and Belizean mother. He completed his Bachelor degree in Biology at Cal State Northridge in 2006, where he was also a collegiate track and field athlete. He then earned his Doctor of Optometry Degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton, CA in 2010. He then moved up to the Reno/Sparks area with his wife Summer, who is also an Optometrist, to start practicing. He worked as a Walmart affiliated optometrist for two years and then had the opportunity to work at Family Eyecare Associates in Sparks, NV for ten years thereafter, until landing here at Pyramid Lake Tribal Health Clinic. Dr. D enjoys seeing a variety of patients but has a keen interest in glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He was able to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to manage these conditions during his education at multiple Indian health Services sites such as the Hu Hu Kam Memorial Hospital in Sacaton, AZ and Fort Duchesne Tribal Health Clinic in Fort Duschesne, UT. When he is not taking care of patients, Dr. D enjoys spending time with his wife and their daughters, Kennedy and Emmersyn. Dr. D is also very active in the community volunteering as an elementary school tutor at his church as well as participating in various vision screenings throughout Northern Nevada. Dr. D looks forward to serving your vision and eye care needs.
